The Devil Wears Prada
This movie is basically a religion for gays.
Like genuinely. There are people who watched this at 14 and immediately decided they needed a better wardrobe, a toxic job, and a woman in sunglasses to psychologically destroy them into becoming hotter.
The fashion in this movie is unreal because it actually understands style as transformation. Andy’s relooking isn’t just a makeover montage, it’s a full rebirth. Watching Anne Hathaway go from lumpy sweaters and confusion to strutting through New York in Chanel boots and that iconic black leather fit… cinema changed forever. The second she starts serving looks in those street shots you understand why everyone lost their minds over this movie.
And the styling still eats because it feels lived in. The layers, the coats, the gloves, the silhouettes ,every outfit tells you exactly who these people are before they even speak. Miranda dresses like she owns the concept of fear itself. Emily looks like she survives exclusively on caffeine and humiliation. It’s perfect.
Also the cerulean sweater monologue remains one of the most lethal scenes ever written about fashion. That wasn’t dialogue that was a public execution.
Anne Hathaway’s transformation is honestly very Madonna-coded too. Like going from awkward girl trying to fit in to full icy fashion fantasy by the end. Reinvention, image, performance, glamour exactly the kind of pop culture alchemy Madonna built a career on.
And visually the movie still looks SO good. Warm, glossy, expensive. Every frame feels like a 2000s Vogue spread.
Perfect film. Actual cultural scripture.
