Sinners
"*white folks, they like the blues just fine. they just don't like the people who make it."
*i have too many things i want to say about this film so i'll just say some details I like.
In the village, near Bo and Grace's store, there is a place called the Blackbird café. This is such a great nod to the song Blackbird, originally written about the young Black civil rights movement.
The vampires' soulless rendition of "Pick Poor Robin Clean" - the song is literally about exploitation and greed, and stripping the life out of someone or something - apart from the obvious significance of colonialism and stealing of culture, this is showing how by assimilating into another culture you are losing yourself, literally, your soul.
I love how the Chinese family in the movie speak with Southern accents - something I've never seen before in Hollywood. The Delta Chinese were a group of immigrants who initially arrived in the area in the late 1800s and they grew a small community there that still exists. Sinners takes place in the 1930s, so it makes sense that the characters would be speaking with southern accents, having grown up in the area since birth. Like in the movie, this community mainly operated grocery stores where they sold to both black and white customers, and it was good that the production took it a step further by giving Grace a white Southern accent and Bo a Black Southern accent to show the kind of code-switching this community would do.
