Seven Samurai
one of the best films i’ve ever seen
of the three kurosawa films i have seen, all three of them being amazing films, this stands out to me as the best. going into this film near enough blind, i expected this to be something of an war epic, however this balanced that with heavy themes such as gender and class divide, and the harsh reality of war.
this is very similar to ran in its commentary on the futility of war
i thought that kikuchiyo was undoubtedly the best written character in the film, i loved his character’s development and how he turned from a drunken peasant desperate to be a samurai, who became a hero who defeated the bandit’s leader.
i loved the ending, as it really highlighted how after war, the samurai and the farmers become divided again, perfectly represented by how shino leaves katsushiro to return to the ritualistic practices on the farm.
anyway, 10/10 masterpiece, loving watching kurosawa’s films. throne of blood next.
