Wicked
I have never saw WICKED on stage before so going in I had nothing to compare it to, and so my review is based on the film alone.
First, Cynthia Erivo girl, you have PIPES! I was blown away by all her performances but The Wizard and I and Defying Gravity she really stole the show with those.
Ariana Grande was fantastic — I knew she could sing but her comedic timing and physical comedy was something else. I laughed out loud so many times and she really brought a likeable side to Glinda even when she was being a bit of a bully (if that’s the right word). She was wonderful in the emotional scenes too and I’d love to see her act more in the future cos she certainly proved she is a multi hyphen.
Jonathan Bailey dancing and singing his socks off while flirting with everyone from the female and male students to the senior librarian was hilarious. I hope we get to see more of him in part two.
Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard perfectly captured the whimsical but also devious nature perfectly and I was surprised by his voice - in a good way! The only one I wasn’t sure about was Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible — I love her as an actress but she seemed a bit out of place. Her singing wasn’t great and she was a bit wooden which I didn’t expect. Who knows — maybe in part two she’ll shine more now we know her true intentions.
