Alien
Only thing that needs to be said here is that the randomness of discovery in the universe is surely followed by the dissonance of ideas. The sight of something never before seen conjures curiosity from the corporate interests ultimately controlling science, fear from the workers, and ambivalence from the captain. At its core, ALIEN represents the futuristic battle between human reason and machine reason in the face of first contact, a conceit which weighs even more prescient today than in 1979. However, the greatest success of this film is a basic one; the strength of pure collaboration. From Giger's Freudian creature design to Scott's masterful world-building, to the script, and the terrific performances of the cast, this is an anti-auteurist masterwork. You take any one person out of the movie, it just doesn't work. And maybe that's the main reason why to me, this is about as great as genre cinema can get. In the words of Ash, "I admire its purity".
Surely one of the GOATs.
