Ring
Even though The Ring got famous worldwide because of its american counterpart (that is literally the same but with slightly more twisted scenes and footage), the original by Hideo Nakada is perfect in its semplicity.
Sadako is not a victim here, she's PURE EVIL.
When alive, she had the power to kill with thoughts, and as a yurei ... she does the same.
I'm pretty sure the sequels will explain better why she was born that way, and maybe justify her actions ... but this first movie shows her as an Unstoppable force of Evil, that seeks to be watched, to let everyone witness the horror she caused, the horror she suffered from and the horror she'll cause (again)... than be copied and spread around the world.
This introductive chapter is not a common horror movie, it's an investigation under the constant pressure of time. You feel the ominous presence of Sadako during the whole week the main characters have left to live, and feel their desperation as time slips away, hour by hour.
The question ... How do they stop her?
What they thought was she needed to be aknowledged, given her body a honorable burial to free her from her own rage for dying, to give her ... compassion.
But NO, Sadako didn't want any of these ... she just wanted to spread fear and death, not love.
Just like in the final scene of its great parody:> "Thank you, your love has broken the curse and freed my soul. I'll never have to kill again ...
Nah, I'm just screwing with you !"
