Frankenstein
What a damn masterpiece from Guillermo del Toro. I really expected little out of this but out came one of the most beautiful production designs I’ve seen and really just a perfect film. The sets and costumes looked flawless and came to life as the cast interacted with every prop and walked around beautifully built labs and ballrooms, and countless other sets.
This cast could not have been better. My biggest question mark coming into this was Oscar Isaac as I really haven’t seen a performance from him that necessarily impressed me but wow did he prove me to be the fool with this. Mia Goth is breathtaking, making limited time and lines meaningless as she gives an Oscar worthy showing, becoming the film’s heartbeat. Christoph Waltz was a nice surprise as he was in this much more than I thought coming into it and showed exactly why he’s a two time Oscar winner. Shout out to Ralph Ineson, just cast him in every classic horror remake. And finally, Jacob Elordi, he really physically transforms to become the monster and plays it with such innocence and fragility that makes for an undeniable presence that leads to this movie all coming together as a success.
The pacing and overall set up for this movie made the runtime fly by and made it the most complete story of Frankenstein ever put on film. Alexandre Desplat, who composed one of my favorite scores for Benjamin Button, put together a masterpiece compliment to the whole film that emphasizes every tragedy, beautiful landscape, and horror, seamlessly and he deserves his flowers for it.
It’s a gothic horror from one of if not the most culturally relevant movie icon of all time and I do feel this is del Toro’s career magnum opus! I’m so glad I got the chance to catch this on film at the theater, but I guarantee I’ll rewatch on Netflix the day it drops!
