Is Michael Mann the best director? No. Is he the coolest? Hands down. Hannibal Lecktor is honestly a non factor because Mann focuses instead on Will Graham, the Vincent Hanna replica detective who’s too straight laced and too cool for all the BS. Mann doesn’t ever try to make the best picture ‘Silence of the Lambs’, he just gets behind the camera and does cool shit. He plays around with experimental lighting that looks better than 99% of the slop we get today, he gives us B-grade cut shoot outs set to a rock n roll song because it’s over the top, gory, practical, and we love it. We get the emotional reunion with his family in the end and we expect a beautiful score to play it out right? No, you blast Heartbeat by Red7 in the background with an orange sunset as a backdrop because it’s badass!
