Barbie
Edited review cause the original was maybe too mean
Barbie feels very superficial in its feminism. While the film contains lots of commentary and many little jabs and metaphors for different parts of misogyny, it has very little critique. As a comedy film and a family film, the film is good, it has funny bits and the dialogue is fun if maybe overly heavy-handed. However, I feel like the final message is quite toothless. Similarly, even the "diverse" casting mainly features lighter/less ethnic actors on the women's side. Also, while Ferrera’s monologue is one of the better parts of the film, the film skirts/doesn't address around her and her daughter being latinos/brown. The chase scenes are fun, the film is very well put together and the set design is gorgeous, but none of this changes how the film's attempt at feminism doesn't really criticise anything at a proper level. Greta Gerwig seems like a great director, and I'd like to see more of what she's made. The voice-over should have been used more. I love Michael Cera. Ironic Ryan Gosling is who got an Oscar for this film.
