Blade Runner 2049
I have less to say about Blade Runner 2049 than the original, but overall, I think this is the better movie with a more intriguing and engaging plot. However, I don’t think it quite looks as good as the first one. Despite that, it's still visually stunning, shot by Roger Deakins, one of my favorite cinematographers. It features some of the most beautiful wide shots I’ve ever seen and remains one of the best-looking sci-fi blockbusters and modern films.
That said, it lacks some of the texture and sophistication of the original. Blade Runner had a more layered and complex visual style, while 2049 opts for a cleaner, flatter image. It’s really up to personal preference. I think both films look amazing, but I prefer the older aesthetic.
Blade Runner 2049 has a more interesting plot in my opinion, with better pacing. I know some find the original boring, and I’ll admit certain sections drag a bit, but I still really like it overall. Both Blade Runner films are fantastic. I love how 2049 doubles down on the bleakness, the collapse of ecosystems, and that whole atmosphere. It’s just a fantastic legacy sequel.
It also loses some of the weirdness from the first movie, which I didn’t mind much. The original had a strange, creepy, and odd tone, which I liked but didn’t care for either way. Blade Runner 2049 feels more straightforward and less weird in comparison. Also, Denis Villeneuve is one of my favorite filmmakers working today, and I still think this is some of his absolute best work and easily ome of my favorite sci-fi movies. Just truly incredible stuff.
