Sing Sing
Wow, this might be my favorite film of the year, and such an incredibly underappreciated gem. My God, what an absolutely wonderful picture this is, such a damn good movie. I’ve barely seen anyone talk about it, and I only found out about it through CinemaJoe on TikTok. Otherwise, I probably never would have watched it, let alone been aware of its existence. Even finding it was a bit of a hassle since it had no theatrical release where I live and no news of a VOD release. Typical A24… I had to search all over the internet to finally watch it, but it was absolutely worth it. It’s a shame it’s so under-advertised because, unfortunately, this is one of those movies few people will hear about.
This film is beautiful, one of those rare movies where you forget the actors are acting. The performances and line delivery are fantastic across the board. Each actor gives such organic and real performances. Every interaction, conversation, heartfelt moment, and monologue feels so authentic. The lead actor, Colman Domingo, gives what’s probably my favorite performance of the year, with an emotional, heartwarming portrayal filled with gut-wrenching moments. It’s a subtle yet powerful ticking time bomb of a performance. The music, though simple, is so effective, helping to build up emotions inside me and making the poignant scenes even more impactful.
I said something similar about Didi, another movie I loved this year and I’ll say it again, these smaller, personal emotional stories are what I truly love and resonate with. I truly hope this film and Colman’s performance get recognized by the Academy because it deserves to win a lot of awards. This is a movie I’d gladly watch again in the future and recommend to anyone. Sing Sing is an intensely powerful, deeply human, and profoundly moving movie that you absolutely need to watch.
