Spider-Man 2
Has all the strengths of the first film, impeccable filmmaking on display and a tremendously entertaining film. It’s genuinely hard not to have a huge grin on my face while watching these. And yet, it’s a step up in every conceivable way, one of the best sequels ever made.
Never has a Spider-Man film or any superhero film, for that matter struck the balance so perfectly between the hero and the alter ego. No other film has portrayed the struggle of being a hero while trying to maintain a personal life, and the toll it takes on him and those around him, so powerfully.
As much as this movie is joyful, funny, occasionally cheesy, heroically triumphant, and creatively action-packed, it’s equally personal, emotional, and intimate, with quieter moments that feel both inherently sincere and beautifully written.
It’s even partially depressing, Peter Parker really goes through it here. His will to keep going and never give up is admirable and inspirational. Despite the fact that no matter what decision he makes, there’s always a trade-off, always a sacrifice, always a consequence, he keeps doing what’s right. Perfectly capturing the essence of a hero.
There’s this saying: everyone wants to be Spider-Man but no one wants to be Peter Parker, and it couldn’t be more true here. This film explores Peter Parker’s struggles like no other.
“He knows a hero when he sees one. Too few characters out there flying around like that, saving old girls like me. And Lord knows, kids like Henry need a hero. Courageous, self-sacrificing people. Setting examples for all of us.”
”I believe there’s a hero in all of us. That keeps us honest. Gives us strength. Makes us noble. And finally allows us to die with pride. Even though sometimes we have to be steady and give up the thing we want the most. Even our dreams.”
Also, no other film in the genre captures a city like this one. New York feels alive, and the people actually matter. The city becomes a character of its own. The way the citizens interact with Spider-Man, how they stand up for him, cheer for him, even criticize him, is just so good.
They don’t make them like this anymore. They really don’t get it. Easily the best Spider-Man movie and one of the best superhero movies ever made. THIS is what the superhero genre used to be, this is what it can be.
