Conclave
Rlly liked this movie. Not fully certain how that speech at the end in the auditorium managed to convince the majority of a religious, conservative/ conservative adjacent, racist, sexist room to change their vote. But, then again, certainty is the great enemy of unity. I thought they could’ve played up the terrorist attacks, the speech (logically I think) would result in Lawrence being elected. Lawrence then sticks it to the man and stays true to his word, denying the papacy. Shock! Awe! How could he? Then maybe he and Benitez go to hospitals in Rome to pray for the victims, breaking the rules of the conclave. Thematically I think it works. Lawrence is having a crisis of faith as it relates to prayer, the late pope was doubting the church (clearly he was close with Lawrence), and Benitez’s true dedication to his faith and servitude is Lawrence’s stepstool to salvation. I just don’t think we needed Benitez to become the pope as a wow moment. A silent, more gentle scene of betraying a system you no longer resonate or believe in to return to the valiant purpose at its core. Idk. Just rambling. Definitely could be wrong and in many ways, it would be a whole new movie.
