such a beautiful and terrifying experience

from one father coming home story to the next... the odyssey tonight 🐎

what a horrifying experience, absolutely blown away. in the same way that many of the great movies are, it was not about its ostensible premise at all - the gore and fright serves only to drive home its core message of just how dangerous the "nice guy" can really be. what's brilliant is how its central premise gets your mind racing at every turn, keeping its mechanics at an arms length so the truly depraved nature of its psychology is allowed to fester in your mind. the very thought of being in the position of Nikki just makes your skin crawl. the sound design was deft in how it gave every beat the impact it deserved. i also think that Inde's performance, which is already iconic at this point, has to go down as a monumental break out performance in history. the movie entirely rests on her selling the torment of her character and she is just shockingly good, it's unbelievable. the supporting cast is also fantastic i also loved its tall aspect ratio! if the intention was to make you feel as boxed in and trapped as the characters in the movie then it paid dividends... love it when the aspect ratio is actually used for effect (im looking at you Saltburn 😒) it's masterful how we are never made to feel bad for Baron, we think and wish that he will be normal and do the right thing but it is continuously driven home how truly sinister what he has done to her is, and he feels no remorse whatsoever. it does the monkey's paw trope so well (it reminded me a bit of Sinners doing the same with vampire tropes) lots of scattered thoughts but overall i cant tell whether i never want to think about it again or if i want to watch it again right away...
