in many ways as heartbreaking as it is horrifying, this is an exceptional exploration into the strange, unique and intertwined relationship of two psychologically-conjoined twins. jeremy irons is outstanding, exploiting the Alexander method to portray starkly opposing personalities at the Mantle twins' furthest points, and blending their personalities almost indistinguishably at their most connected. it is one of the best performances i think ive ever seen, coupled with the unbelivably seamless motion control camerawork to make the twins' scenes look absolutely flawless - it's astonishing how quickly you forget you're not watching two different actors playing the parts, and somehow this was done in 1988!! genevieve bujold is also fantastic as a flawed actress who becomes an unwitting victim of the twins' sexual routine, yet still takes control in her own way.
