The Sacrifice
Sin is that which is unnecessary.
in many ways, Andrei Tarkovsky's last film is his most honest and straight-forward film, in the sense of doing away with much of the oneiric nonlinearity of Mirror. however, to reduce the film to such a description would be to ignore it's sheer and unmistakeable brilliance.
of all his films, The Sacrifice is unashamed in its sincerity - this dying work from the most extraordinary of filmmakers disregards any shred of ease of watching to tell its story in the precise way that Tarkovsky intended. it is challenging to explore, but utterly rewarding if you can let the film absorb you.
a solemn strut through the mind of a broken man desperate to do anything to save his family, i think it is his greatest film.
