Dogtooth
i swear bro greek people always be on some weird shit
Dogtooth is an allegory; but about what, exactly? Personally, I see it as a critique of parents passing down their ideologies, fears, and distorted views of the world to their impressionable children before they’re even capable of questioning them.
It can also be read as a political satire though. The family functions like a totalitarian state: censorship, propaganda, fear of the outside world, manipulated language, and punishment for dissent (keep in mind YL was born during the Greek junta).
Another interpretation focuses on the relationship between language and reality. The children only understand the world through the words and meanings imposed on them by their parents. The film suggests that if power can control language, it can also control perception itself.
That ambiguity is what makes Dogtooth so unsettling, it never fully commits to a single interpretation.
