Ran
A generational film and achievement. A piece of cinema that confirms why the camera and film stock was made.
This is the first movie film that Kurosawa did in color that I've seen. And it is a feast for the eyes. When you look at his black and white films, rarely on screen do you ever see the same shade of gray. His grayscale possesses vibrancy and uniqueness. And he has clearly taken that same eye and was able to apply it masterfully to color.
Also, I don't think another director will come close to him when it comes to reimagining the works of Shakespeare. He's able to stay true to form, to the heart of the original works, and yet be so transformative that he makes it his own.
I'm always amazed by Kurosawa's work. He was a generational talent, and his influence can be felt to this day. One could only be so fortunate as to possess a fraction of the skill and heart that he did.
I can't wait to revisit this film in the future.
