Alien
One of the true elements of horror for me is the auditory and physical texture of Nostromo: the low, resonating industrial sounds; the constant sound of hissing steam; and the damp, subterranean darkness.
The xenomorph exists in this world not just because of its comfort in the interstitial spaces but because it is constructed like the architecture itself, and the creature's actions are masked by the background noise of the vessel. The xenomorph is sonically and visually indistinguishable from the ship's own mechanical breathing. The standard is high.
