Cure
An unnerving discovery of what lurks right beneath the surface of the human psyche.
Every shot is filled with a disturbing sense of stillness—the humming of power lines, the flickering of a light, the unnerving magnetism of Mamiya's empty gaze. The movie serves as a study in urban alienation; the 'cure' is not some supernatural phenomenon, but the complete annihilation of the burden of self-awareness, memory, and responsibilities.
When Mamiya asks, "Who are you?", he reveals the emptiness left behind by the systematic erosion of community and purpose. Very hypnotising, which is only reinforced by the brilliant sound design.
Kurosawa understands that in such an alienated, sterile, and isolated setting as shown in the movie, even a small sound—a snapping match, a door slide, a water drop—carries the weight of a scream. This reinforces the oppressive and existential atmosphere of the film.
