The Doom Generation
this movie changed my life when i was 18 and it only gets better every time i watch it, might be my favorite of gregg araki.
it is, essentially, a coming of age movie, and dare i say one of the most accurate portrayals of the hardships of becoming an adult. every over the top and absurdly violent scene that happens during the first half of the movie portray how brutal and yet absurd adulthood feels like when you're in your late teens, as well as the catastrophic situations that (at least from my experience) your brain might imagine will happen to you, particularly as a queer person who is just exploring their sexuality, which is one of the main plot points of the story. the queer and sexual awakenings of the characters almost make the conflicts feel like punishes and consequences to their "sinful" behaviors.
however, at the end of the movie, this violence reaches its climax and becomes something far more bleak and horrifying, which is what makes it all so realistic and meaningful; because this is the reality of being queer in an era where religion and fascism are so prevalent, and as devastating as it is, what happened to them could happen to any of us. anyway, i could talk about this film for ages, i'm considering adding it to my top 4 bc its probably one of the most fundamental movies in my life.
on a lighter note, when jordan asks about the meaning of our existence in the middle of sex........MEEEEEE
