The Master
Truly feel like I understand so much more the second time around, and yet feel like there’s still so much to uncover. Can’t wait for the subsequent rewatches to come. I had a feeling I’d like this a lot more on the rewatch, but I don’t think I was expecting it to become my favorite PTA film. Hoffman is at the top of his game here and this is my favorite performance of his, he’s truly mesmerizing. Joaquin goes toe-to-toe with him in a way that is so entertaining, and this is quite possibly my favorite performance of his as well. On this watch particular though I really appreciated Amy Adams so much more. It’s amazing to see the subtleness in her performance with the way she seems to be pulling the strings.
All of Anderson’s movies have stunning cinematography, but this one is easily one of his best in that regard.I think the only film that really rivals it at the moment for me is Phantom Thread. I love the 50s look they are able to get with their locations/sets, and I even found myself appreciating the score a lot more too.
Easily PTA at his most psychological. I love it so much. 10/10
