Moonlight
*tender, beautiful, emotional, *moonlight (2016,) directed by barry jenkins.
*the first act of the film, "little," is perhaps my favorite thing to come out of cinema. it resonates with me more than anything. the sad, little black boy that was seen as "soft" and considered to be "gay" by not only his peers, but grown adults like his parent(s) aswell. the boy who was only raised by his mother. the production design, scoring, and performances by the actors take me back to the experience of being a kid.

i watched this interesting analysis by "sage's rain" on youtube, and it really captures what this film is ultimately about. its about masculinity and homophobia in the black community. vulnerability and emotion is seen as whitewashed or gay, and suppressing all feeling in favor of confidence is seen as the peak of black masculinity. but being empathetic is what really makes you a real man, and Juan is what mainly represents that.
everybody should watch this film, not matter queer or black, after all, it won the best picture oscar of 2017 for a reason.
