Asylum
The self fulfilling prophecy between the inhabitants of a mental hospital & the doctors: believe me normal and I shall be normal. Believe me crazy, and I shall act accordingly.
I had so much fun with this one. If you can safely sidestep the obvious when it comes to 1970s mental health care, I highly recommend. I find the mix of supernatural elements and delusions synthesizing into a delicious smoothie of disbelief; where even the viewer is uncertain of what is real and what is not. My favorite way the 70s portrays “insane” people is to try to bring the viewer equal with them (let’s scare Jessica to death, the exorcist, the stepford wives, even 1962’s carnival of souls). It’s done imperfectly and offensively, but it’s done nonetheless.
Add to the pile of adult goosebumps movies. Dont let the PG rating sway you :)
