Sinners
Alright, the minute the final credit scene rolled, I marked this as five stars, but now I have slept on it to do my actual review (that's more than just a straight from the dome mess):
1. Coogler did his fucking research when it comes to vampires, monstrosity, and the oppressed. This is a film that is less of a blockbuster to me and more like an expertly woven thesis. The themes are intelligent, witty, and satisfying, and they come together seamlessly.
2. Everyone gave unbelievable performances. Jordan was flawless in his portrayal of two different brothers, to the point where I kept forgetting that both Smoke and Stack were played by the same actor. His decision to use subtle body language and speech patterns to separate the twins was genius. Also Miles Caton in his breakout role? Incredible. Absolutely cinema. Can not wait to see what else he decides to do.
3. The visual craftsmanship was beautiful. Night scenes are lovely and striking compared to bright, nauseating daylight. The aspect ratio changes to increase your focus on the scene as a whole. Distortion filters are used in necessary, complex ways.
You're missing out by not seeing this in theaters right now. Take two hours of your day to see it. You won't regret it.
