Your Name.
I haven't really written an actual review in quite some time now, but if there's one film that I believe deserves a review, it is this one.
Before I start - I am fully aware that this movie is not going to be entirely appealing to everyone - I personally enjoy anime films, but I can understand why a lot of people might be turned off of them, since they can indeed be trope-y at times and a little too dramatic. That being said, I really do recommend everyone give this specific film a try.
What Your Name does as a whole isn't anything like I've seen before. Have I seen the classic "we've switched bodies!!!" trope before? Of course. Have I seen love stories before? Obviously. But never have I seen such a crazy plot twist in the middle of a film that changed the course and nature of the film itself. The plot kept me guessing over and over again, and each time I was taken for a turn which I didn't expect. There were times during this movie where I would cry of laughter, and there were times where I was just fucking crying. The message and the drive of this film were so extraordinarily pure that you rooted for the characters with every bit of hope you had within you.
Besides the fantastic plot, my favourite part of the film was no doubt the visuals. Every shot absolutely blew me away and the colours in this film (which are SUPER important for obvious reasons) were something that was pulled off brilliantly.
Lastly, without giving anything away, my pet peeve with a lot of anime movies is that the ending sucks. It either leaves the audience to guess what happened, or it's just extremely depressing. However, this particular film manages to pull off it's ending brilliantly. So many times in films I am left thinking of a different and better way the ending could have gone, but by the end of this one, I really couldn't have asked for anything else.
Anyways you should all go see this movie and if my testament isn't enough - not only was myself and the person I went with crying, but there was a couple NEXT to us that was crying even more than us. So THANK YOU Makoto Shinkai for giving me a film that was, in my opinion, somewhat like 5 Centimeters per Second, but leagues better.
