Drive
I saw this movie for the first time a little over five years ago on New Years Eve 2019, and it’s stuck with me in a strange way ever since.
I hate that it’s become a “sigma male” movie recently and that most people both embrace and discard it as such, because there’s so much more going on under the hood than that. Underneath is a story about a man trying to do right despite the odds against him, both mentally and physically, and how it ends up for him as a result.
The soundtrack was what initially drew me to this movie, coming off an honorable mention on WatchMojo’s best soundtracks of the 2010s. I added most of it to my Spotify not long afterwards, and it became a symphony for the end of my adolescence. I still listen to it fondly to an extent, thinking of it as nostalgic and also something to take with me into the future.
The cinematography and overall vibe of the movie drew me in so quickly and tightly, I was instantly hooked. The happier scenes in particular made me feel more than most movies have made me feel, in past and present.
There is not a single poor performance in this movie, in my opinion. Everybody does their job, everybody conveys what is needed to be conveyed even in their most subtle expressions and motions.
Regardless of what I think, everyone should give this movie a chance. It is worthy of your time, and hopefully you feel the same way about it as I do.
