Phantom Thread
One of the most interesting character dynamics I think I have ever seen… Both are incredibly narcissistic in their own right. Reynolds lets his tendencies, routine and idiosyncrasies rule him to project his perfectionist work and maintain his prestige. Alma is the perfect calamity, she doesn’t let his tendencies rule her and she pushes the barrier so often the barrier became weaker, cracks started to form and they showed in his work.
Writing aside, the filmmaking of this is among the best I’ve ever seen. The dining table is where so many important events happened, and it changes every time so cleverly. One of my favourite shots is when Reynolds asks Alma to marry her whilst the camera slowly moves closer to them and the wedding gown gets slowly erased, foreshadowing what will come of his work and relationship next. So many little details throughout, there’s not one wasted frame in this.
I think this might be favourite PTA film so far, maybe just maybe over There Will Be Blood? It is that brilliant, it is a perfect film.
