Fallen Angels
I absolutely loved this. This is honestly one of the best movies I’ve ever seen.
It’s just so stylish and unique. Wong Kar-wai really feels like he’s doing whatever he wants with the movie, and somehow it all works. The whole thing has such a strong personality. It’s basically just pure vibe, and it completely worked on me.
The soundtrack is incredible, the camera work is insane, and visually this might be one of the most beautiful movies I’ve ever seen. The lighting, the colors, the way Hong Kong looks at night, the motorcycle scenes… everything just looks amazing. I’m also so glad I saw this at the cinema because this is exactly the type of movie that deserves the big screen.
I loved the characters too, especially He Zhiwu. He was easily my favorite. I loved his voice-over monologues, and just his whole presence in the movie. He’s funny, weird, kind of sad, and super likeable.
The movie is also way funnier than I expected. There are so many random moments that made me laugh.
There are a few moments where the momentum slows down a little, but honestly not enough for me to care that much.
And the ending is perfect. Seeing Hong Kong in daylight for the first time after spending basically the entire movie at night was such a nice touch, and that final motorcycle scene was beautiful.
This movie just feels completely confident in what it is.
ABSOLUTE CINEMA
