Hamilton
oh boy where do i begin? let's just get the obvious things out of the way.
i really love this show as a musical and not so much in the historical aspect since it glorifies the founding fathers and doesn't really address certain topics enough such as slavery (see the cut song "cabinet battle #3"). i did go through that hamilton phase when i was 16 and was putting everything i admired on a pedestal. it was interesting watching/listening to it 4 years later having a slightly different perspective in life and living in a different world.
i saw the show live two years ago for my 18th birthday and there were so many things i forgot happened visually. it was beautifully shot but of course any type of proshot is bound to miss everything that happens on stage. you don't get to see certain parts of the intense choreography, the acting of the ensemble, and the amazing lighting that happens on stage.
the songs are beautiful and how each motif/theme of each character is weaved into the show before you realize it. you feel the emotions that each character is feeling from eliza's smitten look of love in "helpless" to alexander's grief and sadness in "it's quiet uptown". it hits hard when you can clearly see the actor's face and hear every emotion they put into it on stage. (also if it seemed an actor was overacting since i've seen a lot of people talking about it (i.e: lin in "it's quiet uptown"), every action and emotion you make on stage has to be big and exaggerated so it could be seen/felt all the way towards the back of the theatre. it didn't translate well into film so that's why it looked "weird".
i hope this pushes the theatre/broadway industry to pursue releasing their shows like this. yes i know there are so many obstacles to go through, but now due to the pandemic, broadway and professional productions in general are going to be less accessible than it was (it still wasn't easy before thanks to travel, high prices and so many other factors). i know that there's the broadway HD streaming service where other proshots and concerts of productions are posted. i feel like if broadway goes towards that direction, it would benefit a lot of aspiring theatre kids/theatre fans to see their favorite shows whenever they want in the comfort of their own home.
