Dìdi (弟弟)
watching a fourteen year old be so casually cruel to his mother out of that childhood need to be cool, to not be seen with her, to put distance between himself and the person who sacrificed the most for him is one of the more depressing things you can watch. and yet the film is generous enough to hold both things at once. he is fourteen. he does not know what he is doing. kids do not understand what cool costs.
I was not embarrassed by my mother growing up. I knew what she sacrificed. but watching this made me think of her anyway, made me feel something about her that I did not have words for in the moment and still do not entirely.
