Hard Boiled
I've finally seen all of the John Woo films in his 'golden period' and what a film to end on.
Observing the evolution between A Better Tomorrow and this is nuts, like ABT is a great movie and I love it a lot, but by this point John Woo was in a league of his own producing some of the best films to come out of not just Hong Kong but Asia itself.
Paying attention to the action which is choreographed so much better here, the cinematography is excellent, Chow Yun-Fat delivers his best performance (in a John Woo film) here. I found the stakes to be at their best in a John Woo film, it felt so fun, but also tense.
It is a shame that this is Woo's last HK movie (his last in Cantonese + last not involving the mainland), but in a way I'm glad he ended this generational run on a high. I look forward to checking out some of his earlier films.
