Lady Bird
oh i could write essays about this film i love it with my whole heart.
i relate to lady bird so much. how she longes to move far away from home to leave what she knows behind. how she “hates” her hometown…
i think about the scene in the thrift shop at least once a week. lady birds love language is words of affirmation and she seeks that from her mum. she wants her to tell her how she loves her and LIKES her, that shes beautiful and shes proud of her. but her mum doesnt know how to express that, in fact shes really emotionally immature and only acts that way towards lady bird but shes sweet caring and kind to everyone else.
i relate to this so much because i sometimes feel like that with my own parents, because sure they love me (and i realise im lucky for that and i appreciate it) and they try to give me the best opportunities and work for me to have a good life (like lady birds parents did) but sometimes i think they dont really like who i am. or they dont care who i am and they dont bother to get to know me, to ask me what i like and enjoy. and sure its not like they dislike me but they dont really like me, i think.
or the scene where the nun tells her that she writes about sacramento with such passion she must love it, even though she dreams of moving far far away. because deep down she doesnt realise her love for the city yet, which is such a beautiful concept.
or when she finally moves to new york she starts introducing herself as christine - which i think represent her understanding her mother a bit and growing up? unerstanding she wasnt always reasonable and maybe acknowledging that she misses her home and driving around the familiar streets, seeing the familiar places and being with her family.
AND her mum driving around the airport because she regrets not saying goodbye to her? the car scenes it this film are something else.
i also really liked when she decided to ditch kyle and all of her new friends who didnt want to go to prom to be with julie and she finally realised who her true friends are and who cares about her.
i dont know i really love this film with my whole heart and i am incredibly inspired by greta gerwig and her work. shes so talented and creates all of her characters with such passion, you can really tell she loves what she does.
and lady bird. shes really a part of my soul at this point, she is one of my favourite characters of all time. shes so herself and she dreams of being more, of being somewhere else and of being appreciated. and sure shes flawed and selfish at times but that makes her human and makes me love her so much
