Holy crap I forgot how good this movie is.
When I sit and recall important moments in my life, this is how it feels. Nonlinear, yet I understand the impact of each of those moments. Tarkovsky invites us into his mind, recalling life from a position of near death. It feels so realistic yet so oneiric - so relatable yet so distant. This isn’t a coherent story but at the same time it is.
Every single frame is a painting as well. Pausing the film at any random place will still be a perfect image. This is 100% my favorite Tarkovsky film, but it’s also a perfect length for him. He does tend to drag, and a 2 hour movie is great for him. I don’t feel like this drags at all, and it’s over just as fast as it starts.
