Nebraska
I’m trying not to judge so quickly, however this does feel like one of the most somber, yet comforting movies i’ve ever seen. Immediate top 4. Maybe even top 3. When I was a kid this is the kind of movie I imagined adults watched.
For Payne, I’ve only ever seen the Holdovers, and it is one of my favorite movies and throughout this I kept comparing the two - where the emotion is based, how it’s pieced together, the dialogue, story, etc. This movie I feel was stronger than The Holdovers, while also having a more hard hitting story to me. I feel we all have struggled to connect with a parent, dealt with feeling stuck in life, empty, and at a loss for purpose. The story feels so raw, relatable, and honesty cold too. The relation between a caring son and an indifferent father is something that’s awful to see, yet we see it so often.
On top of the father/son story, this film shows the feeling of pursuing something - whether money or fame - and once you achieve it, it’s not enough. The most important things in life are what you can do for other people. Woody is an example of chasing a dream, and chasing purpose, while being empty while David is the person who wishes to help no matter what. David takes time off work, looses money and chases a pipe dream just to give a father who doesn’t love him some sense of purpose. Woodys wife also is an example of bitterness and resentment taking you nowhere in life, jealous of others and mad at others for being more successful or more fulfilled than you.
I don’t want to spoil the end, however it’s the only way this movie could’ve ended right.
This movie has everything I’d ever ask for in a film. I feel like this movie is made for me. I have no words. It fits exactly what I look for in a movie. It feels like eating biscuits and gravy curdled up in a warm blanket while crying.
