Aftersun
after my third time watching aftersun, i'm still left unable to explain how and what i feel. so this isn't a proper review.
charlotte wells has an extremely important, magical power within her, one that's crucial for the future of cinema. she has been able to portray loss, memory and mental illness in a way that i'm not sure i've seen before. her direction has this warmth to it. like your favorite morning coffee. it hugs you and touches you and invites you. it takes you to places unknown yet places that somehow feel familiar.
there's this thing i rarely feel. a nostalgia for a moment you've never lived. aftersun made me feel that way.
thank you charlotte. and thank you paul.
lastly, i'll share something paul said in a letterboxd interview:
"memory is a very powerful thing, and it's warm."
it is indeed, warm.
