Frances Ha
AHOY SEXY!
Frances Ha has been one of my favorite films since the very first time I watched it but I’ve never taken the time to write a proper review about it, so that’s what I’ll try to do.
A love letter to friendship, to growing up, to figuring out. A love letter to nostalgia, to self discovery, to understanding. I believe Frances Ha to be the core, the most important reflection of who Noah and Greta are, both, together, and as individuals. Shot both, in the style of French New Wave cinema and with the tools of a film student, Frances Ha captures and portrays, in perhaps the most perfect way, what it is to grow up without being ready for it.
Greta gives the performance of a lifetime, giving life to hers and Noah’s screenplay in a way I’m not sure anyone else would’ve been able to do so. Mickey Sumner is extremely magical here, her every minute on screen is oh so enjoyable. Adam Driver’s performance is also a huge highlight for me, he’s just so incredibly, naturally funny.
I believe the “what I want” monologue to be perhaps my favorite one ever. And of course, having it happen to Frances at the very end with her best friend, Sophie, will never not make me cry.
What a marvelous, magical film.
I’m so embarrassed, I’m not a real person yet.
