Lady Bird
as many of yall know (probably every single person at this point because i never shut the fuck up about it), lady bird is my all time favorite film. has been since its release and will probably be for the rest of my life. i’ve said a lot about it, i’ve analyzed it and reviewed it a billion times, however, there’s one thing i don’t think i’ve ever talked about, one that i think is the key aspect for this film to work the way it does. that aspect being how larry (lady bird’s dad) handles his relationships with both, lady bird and marion (lady bird’s mom). the way he connects with both of them individually, yet never adds to their conflicts. the way he lets them go through their journey carefully, without negatively affecting the way they think about each other. never adding to their rage. i feel like a lot (if not most) cases of conflict between mother and daughter end up with the father of the family talking shit about his daughter’s mother. with the father and the daughter teaming up, which doesn’t happen here. i feel like that’s what makes this film so special. and what makes marion’s and lady bird’s relationship travel and evolve allowing them to grow individually which leads to a healthier and mature relationship.
and that’s all thanks to greta’s attention to detail.
