Arrival

Did I just win Letterboxd?  Showing Arrival to my friends for the first time surely ups the film snobbery for me and I don’t even care. I love this movie for the same reason everyone does and I don’t care. It’s that good. This film is multilingual. It’s fluent in its execution of cinematography, screenwriting, editing, scoring, and genre. These elements all communicate seamlessly and level me every time. One of the few science fiction/speculative fiction films that best utilize its trappings to tell a surprisingly human story. The gift of language, listening, and love all at once. There are so many additional delicious things that make this film perfect to me.  BECAUSE HANNAH IS SPELLED THE SAME FORWARDS AND BACKWARDS! BECAUSE DESPITE KNOWING THE JOURNEY AND WHERE IT LEADS I EMBRACE IT!  Don’t think I’ll ever stop loving this one.
