Coco
god i’m a wreck, but God am i happy i rewatched this movie.
it’s such a beautiful film and it has a very special place in my heart.
my grandma was a church choir director and as she got older and was moved into a nursing home, because her and my grandpa kept falling living on their own, she started to lose a bit of herself. it’s like she knew her story was coming to an end.
my grandpa passed away july of 2019 and almost everyone in my family said “oh, grandma won’t be too far behind him. she loved him here, so she’ll won’t want to be without him for too long.” and that statement made me sad as a 15/16 year old. but, it made me cherish all the time i had with my grandma after.
that august i turned 16 and immediately got my drivers license. and every other week i tried to go see my grandma after school. it usually made me sad because sometimes she’d say “oh kevin, how are you?” and my cousin kevin is in his late 20s early 30s. and sometimes my grandma would just kind of sit there and just stare at me or at the tv. but the visits i loved the most were the ones where she would want to go to the room where they had the piano and she would start singing for me. she Loved to sing hallelujah, and though her fingers wouldn’t at first play the right notes she would almost immediately fix it. well covid came and my last visit with my grandma was through her window talking to her on the phone.
the first time i watched this movie i Sobbed.
this is the first time i’ve watched it since my grandma passed away in october of 2020 and it Wrecked me. even parts that didn’t make me tear up before.
but the part that always makes me cry is the scene with miguel and coco. it’s probably the same way with most people, but i just Sob when coco starts singing with miguel.
grandma, thank you for giving me a reason to love music and to continue being in choir. i know you’re listening to my concerts from up above.
