Superman
I feel like a kid again. Watching Superman, I felt like 10 year-old me watching Iron Man for the first time in awe and just thinking “Holy shit, this is fucking awesome. I can’t deny anymore that James Gunn knows his way with comic book films, it feels like he was born to direct this film, to direct the Guardians trilogy and The Suicide Squad.
The entire film, I had a giddy little smile on my stupid face and it never went away. David Corenswet is just fucking amazing as Superman and Clark Kent, his charm as Superman, his dorkiness as Clark Kent is balanced so well throughout the film. Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor is so full of hatred and spite that I just have to love his take on the character.
The supporting cast as well, Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, Isabela Merced, Anthony Carrigan, Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, María Gabriela de Faría & our Lois Lane Rachel Brosnahan who is pretty much a co-lead are so amazing, they all get some really good scenes and moments and I can’t just not love all of them in this.
The plot as well is so fucking effective in todays age and what we are going through, I fucking love the Anti-Israel metaphor and the Immigrant metaphor for Superman as a character, it feels so good seeing something like this in a modern film and in a Superman film as well and it works so well with what’s been established with the character from the comics, tv-shows and past films (not you Man of Steel).
Superman also just feels like a comic book and I love Gunn embracing the comics and the wacky shit that happens in them, Krypto, the suns effect on Superman, his hypno-glasses and the world that we’ve just been dropped into.
Big shoutout to the VFX work, the score which is so effective when it’s used in certain moments just hearing John Williams original score from the Donner films instills hope into scenes and it’s so beautiful. I also just love the camera work and the cinematography, I love how cinematographer Henry Braham uses the Leica Tri-Elmer lens to capture the fight scenes and the flying scenes which emphasises how fast Superman is moving and it just makes the film look that 10% better than any other comic book film. The colours as well just pop out of the screen and the lighting as well is so good, so many bright scenes and when there are dark scenes they look so beautiful.
I’m in love with this start to the new DCU and cannot wait for Supergirl and Peacemaker Season Two to release, maybe it’s finally time for DC to get their time in the spotlight and to give everyone a sense of hope and to just simply Look Up.
