Obsession

Obsession is a horror movie that has so much suspense in it that you can never quite get comfortable after the intro. Shots lingering, noises lingering, fake-outs, and split second actions all cause a horrifyingly suspenseful movie that can somehow make a whole theater laugh at times —————————————-spoilers————————————- The lighting in scenes of Nikki or the possessed version of Nikki (I will refer to this version as Willow) you see the eyes of the Willow perfectly lit to build suspense even when everything else is calm. Lightning 15/10 When the Willow switched back to Nikki for split seconds and loses control from Nikki fighting back you have no idea until we see Nikki awake while the Willow is sleeping. Psychological horror 10/10 There are two evil characters in this, Bear and the Willow, both of which are Bears fault. We think Bear is the one being caused the most pain by all this but he ends up choosing his life with the Willow over freeing Nikki. Bear is the ultimate wannabe hero, trying to live in an I’m going to get the girl story but in the process of that destroys her entire life and more.  In the final act we see where a normal tragedy ends with a Romeo and Juliet ending where both Bear and the Willow were set to die. Right as this happens we see Nikki wake back up as Bear has fully died and we can see by her disgust of Bear and ultimately her mild understanding of the place she is at as she had some knowledge of what was happening. We also see this in the Willow and Nikki switching at the party. This switch shows the true protagonist and the true victim in all of this.  The irony in the one hurt by obsession is the obsessed one while the only one hurt by it is the one who is obsessed over is a showing of what it’s like being that person. When we see people stalked we see it end a lot like the ending of this movie, either the stalker disappears leaving you with nothing but the remains of your life post stalker, or they have a chance of getting arrested but most of the time they just remove themselves like Bear did.  When Bear is in the bathroom and you hear the One Wish Willow and hear it break you still don’t know for sure what has happened. This is possible because of how psychological this movie is. There were two main thoughts in my head. The Willow made him love her or Nikki made him kill her. Either possible and accessible based on what we’ve seen to be possible. Even when he kissed her I never knew if he was just going to snap her neck right there and then. Finale 10/10
