The Devil, Probably
A warm bath of anguish
The devil probably is aptly named description of what could possibly have gotten us to this point. Some cosmic biblical pull further and further down the rung of cultural collapse.
Simply removing yourself from the equation before things go any further isn’t a good choice even in the last moments of despair there is still life to live and things to be said however, the devil probably does bring to attention and important discussion point on how are you supposed to function knowing the proverbial devil is probably only going to pull the world further down as time goes on.
I don’t know a single person who was hopeful for the future, not necessarily in terms of their lives falling apart personally but in terms of the world that large things getting any worse is the equivalent of making a nuclear bomb 20% deadlier it’s already killing everyone so making it worse is only symbolic at this point.
Bresson here does not at all provide any sort of solution however he does acknowledge that this is a real state that young people are in and one that feels particularly relevant at the moment.
However, I think we already know all of this. The devil probably is really not breaking any new ground whatsoever. No one at this point is blind too the hell scape we all are currently enduring yet I still find this film rather useful not as a prescription of course but as a cathartic simulation of something I feel likely more of us than not our experiencing.
Of all the many words we could use to describe how we possibly got to such a tragically horrifying situation as a society something demonically influence seems fairly fitting
A profoundly unpleasant viewing experience, but with an Endearing honesty that lingers far beyond the final frame.
