Much better than anticipated! The first 30 minutes are killer, love what’s going on. The dynamics are also a high point. The MCU has really tried to build its solo movies off of duos and the like without much success (IMO) but I liked what was happening here. I’m still a bit disappointed because there was a movie in here that I could have loved. The MCU continues to give me the crumbs of deeper relationships and expects me to feast on the meals in my head canon. Still, I had a good time and this is easily the best of the Tom Holland Spider Man movies. It still doesn’t hold a candle to either of the SpiderVerse movies but literally no other superhero film does.

Add this to the parenthood PSA list along with Alien, The Coffee Table, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and most novels. This was a vibe, a mood piece, something right up my alley. It doesn’t connect on the emotional level that much of Twin Peaks hits but it registers on a certain frequency of understanding. I couldn’t tell you what anything means but in a much more real way I feel like I understood it all perfectly clearly. Babies are freaky, marriage is freaky, in-laws, neighbors, your own sense of self, everyone is a freak.

If only Friedkin could’ve done an adaptation of The Getaway. The last 40 minutes are something special. A surreal descent into hell that perfectly vibes with everything shown up until that point. This movie was killer! It captures a thrill-seeking hedonism that is horrifying to behold. Can you really expect anything different in LA? Yes. Can you really expect anything different from the Feds? 🤨 Always love seeing Willem acting up.

Bong Joon Ho films practically always deal with capitalism to some extent. With that and the military presence in the country, the United States has had a pronounced and oftentimes harmful effect on South Korea. The Host presents an obvious monster that preys on the most vulnerable. The government, the police, the military, the obvious suspects are all more concerned with covering up their culpability than they are in stopping the threat. It’s a film that is still relevant to today. It’s topical. It’s timeless. It’s Bong Joon Ho.
