Hypnotic and hallucinatory, Kurosawa reveals a simmering violence underneath the mundane. He draws tension out of a cigarette lighter and drops of water through masterful direction and editing. It’s a film that delights in never answering any questions, leaving you to ponder through its surreal layers.
