The Wind Rises
“The wind is rising, we must try to live.”
The Wind Rises engages with dreams. It asks if it’s possible to make your dreams come to life without reality corrupting them to some extent. It shows the fleeting nature of beauty, whether it’s worth it to have a world with pyramids or without, knowing the toll and pain required to create them and what they represent now. All dreams become someone else’s in the waking world, but we must try to live.
Miyazaki does not give an example of how to live. He challenges his audience to keep dreaming and to try and make ugliness of our daily lives look a little more like our dreams, even if they can be used to make the world a little uglier.
It’s a beautiful film, easily my favorite biopic.
