Knives Out
I am utterly shocked. The first time I watched this was during its theatrical release in later 2019 and I really didn't get it. I thought it was good but was not convinced that it deserved all the praise it got. That later led to a type of fatigue, making me dislike the film more and more over time but having not actually seen it in a while. But with its sequel's title--Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery--being revealed today, I decided to rewatch it and... Well, let me put it this way: If I were to say the fatigue washed away quicker than the Flash, that would be an understatement. Even with the knowledge of how everything unfolds, every ounce of excitement and intrigue that I had in my body was given to this film as a gift. The editing is incredible, keeping the pace at a specific tempo that never drags once; a brilliant screenplay that fits the tone and characters perfectly, making hilarious lines such as a monologue about a donut hole or something like
“WHAT WERE THE OVERHEARD WORDS OF THE NAZI CHILD MASTURBATING IN THE BATHROOM?”
feel somewhat natural; stunning cinematography that encapsulates the "autumn" tone in such a way that takes the cold setting and gives it some warmth, but only when it needs to; exciting and energetic camera movements that make even the slowest of scenes entertaining; almost of the performances given are great and you can just tell they were having a blast on set; the score is one of, if not, my favorite musical accompaniments my ears ever had the pleasure of experiencing; and, lastly, the number of twists and turns would normally be overwhelming, but the way the mystery folds is so engaging that it perfectly paces each reveal to let the previous sink in. My two and only two flaws with this film are:
1) Some of the performances kind of fall flat for me, but never so much that it's distracting (the only one that I really noticed was Ana De Armas near the ending).
2) Daniel Craig's weird fake accent; it really hurt to watch.
All in all, this is probably the most entertaining film I have ever seen and I'm actually kind of worried that the sequel might be--screw it--bad. But I don't want to set any expectations as all we have is a cast list and a title so we'll just have to wait and see...
