The Shining
“SEE, IT’S OKAY. HE SAW IT ON THE TELEVISION.”
Kubrick just, like, knows, man… I don’t know what it is but this one of the only films I will defend with my life if people call it overrated. I don’t know how “film-bro” that sounds but I rest my case: This is probably my favorite film ever made. It has some of best cinematography, the usual with Kubrick films, an unsettling score that fits perfectly with the unsettling tone (something that remains consistent throughout, even subtly being in the first fifteen minutes), and such brilliant editing that tightens and smoothens out the pacing so the (mainly) one-location setting doesn’t seem boring. Jack Nicholson, (especially) Shelly Duvall, Danny Lloyd Scatman Crothers… they all do an amazing job and deliver such realistic performances that never leave my mind. And the ending is only film ending to actually get under my skin… this film’s amazing. Definitely my #1 horror film and possibly of all time, who knows?
