The Bride!
While there may be some element of recency bias here, I can definitely say that I haven't had a big, dumb smile on my face for as much of the runtime of any movie I've watched recently.
Playing out like a fever dream combining aspects of 'Bonnie & Clyde,' 40s musicals, and riot grrl cinema (especially 'Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains) with a healthy dose of irreverence, comedy, and pathos, set to a soundtrack of Carl Stalling, Raymond Scott, and Fever Ray, this is exactly the kind of unhinged maximalism I was expecting from '"Wuthering Heights"' but didn't get.
Built on the back of a spectacularly contorted (both physically and verbally) performance by Jessie Buckley, Maggie Gyllenhaal has come up with a clever film that brings a knowing history of the genre together with a wry intelligence while allowing the whole film to exist like a great sparking firework, with plot shards and set pieces firing off in all directions.
It's really great and really beautiful and I loved it.
I'll write more about it when I see it again.
