Heat
Just simply the greatest action/thriller ever created. Micheal Mann just has this magic touch when it comes to crafting the most professional and sleek feeling crime films. It has this superb yet subtle quality to it overall, from its camera work to amazing cast. Set mostly at night in LA’s gritty neon lit city, it gives you the feeling like you can never sleep, never close your eyes and never not watch your back.
The bank shootout scene gives me genuine chills and is the most realistic feeling gun fight I’ve ever seen. There’s so many layers to this film and small details about each character which you pickup on rewatch. Despite it being an action film about a cat and mouse chase typically set it never ever feels like a typical blockbuster, it’s just floating in this higher realm for me.
The writing of the characters is also amazing, Deniro has this genuine withdrawn coldness to him the entire time embodying his own philosophy and ideology as a crook. As well as Pacino’s tormented workaholic approach. Chefs kiss.
